Te Pae Christchurch Wins Skål International Sustainable Tourism Award

Te Pae Christchurch General Manager Ross Steele said he is incredibly proud of this international recognition. “This award is a credit to the entire Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre team and their commitment to foster a culture of environmental excellence.”

“Sustainability is a key operational pillar for Te Pae Christchurch and an area our whole team is passionate about. We view all significant decisions through an environmental lens and are driven to provide world class sustainable convention centre operations, creating meaningful change for future generations,” Mr Steele said.

The prestigious 2023 Skal International Sustainable Tourism Awards hosted a record number of 68 entries from 18 countries. Evaluated by an independent judging panel of esteemed sustainability experts, this awards programme recognises remarkable achievements, innovation, and best practices in sustainability and responsible tourism.

Te Pae’s international recognition adds to Ōtautahi Christchurch’s reputation as destination for purposeful business events.

In 2025 Te Pae will be host venue for the 8th Adaptation Futures Conference (AF2025), part of the United Nations World Adaptation Science Programme (WASP). The conference is set to convene 1,500 of the world's leading network of scientists, practitioners, governments, industry and community, youth, educators and communicators.

As a city, Christchurch is aligned to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and has a goal of net zero emissions by 2045. The CBD is easily walkable, making for a smaller delegate carbon footprint, and transport options include electric car shares, e-scooters and e-bikes. Electric public buses run to and from Christchurch Airport - the world's first airport to achieve Level 4 Transformation of the Airports Council International “Airport Carbon Accreditation” programme - the highest level of airport carbon reduction best practice.
