Where To Stay In Christchurch

Boutique Hotels Stuffed With Art, Rugged Farm Stays, and a Luxury Lodge:

Where To Stay in Christchurch

The city of Ōtautahi Christchurch is home to a diverse range of hotels, lodges, resorts and farm stays. It can be a challenge to know where to start a holiday in Ōtautahi Christchurch.

Getting your accommodation sorted is the first step – be it a luxurious stay or something a little more rustic.

We’ve done the groundwork and pulled together our favourites.

Otahuna Lodge

Just like the city of Christchurch itself, Otahuna Lodge in Tai Tapu just outside the city combines the modern luxuries of a city with the traditional landscape of New Zealand. Aside from being the country’s largest private residence, the lodge is set against the backdrop of an ancient volcano, manicured gardens and wild woodlands.

In addition to all the trappings of high-end accommodation and service, dining at Otahuna Lodge is its own experience. In the lodge’s dining room, locals and guests alike tuck into a daily degustation menu, with produce sourced largely from Otahuna’s own potager and orchard. Travellers who find themselves at Otahuna Lodge during winter and spring months are often also greeted with gourmet events, so plan your trip accordingly.

Pōhue Purepod

An hour’s drive from Christchurch, Pōhue Purepod is located on the stunning Banks Peninsula in an intimate spot in Port Levy. The secluded Pōhue Purepod is surrounded by rolling hills and rocky outcrops, sheltered by lush conifer trees. Essentially, it’s a single room with a deck giving guests the feeling of being perched on nature’s doorstep. It’s an ideal spot for those looking for solitude and relaxation.

The pod also lies at the end of a spectacular drive around Banks Peninsula, past Charteris Bay and Diamond Harbour, and up over a hill above Purau. From there, it’s a 25-minute stroll to your accommodation along a track that winds through native bushland (so be sure to pack your walking shoes.)

Observatory Hotel

Located in the heart of Christchurch city centre, the Observatory Hotel sits within the The Arts Centre Te Matatiki Toi Ora, bringing contemporary flavour to an area rich with history. Opened in May 2022, the hotel’s 33 rooms are uniquely styled with hand-picked, locally crafted fittings. Alongside typical luxuries like a gym and the stylish Bijou Bar, the Observatory Hotel features in-house galleries, museums, a boutique cinema, retailers. Enjoy wine tastings and long lunches at the Cellar Door (make a reservation to save your spot).

The Mayfair

A new addition to Christchurch’s city skyline is The Mayfair, a boutique luxury hotel located on the edge of the city centre. With views of Hagley Park and perfect proximity to all that the bustling Victoria St has to offer, The Mayfair’s elegant design features warm, earthy tones which contribute to a relaxed and modern environment.

The hotel’s diner, Majestic at Mayfair, is as versatile as it is luxurious, serving as both a cafe and a cocktail bar, so you can pull up a seat for breakfast each morning or pop in for a pre-dinner drink later on. And if your stay falls on a weekend, indulge in the high tea (which, they promise, is “high tea with a twist”.)
